Ode to Petroleum and Pharmaceuticals
I never thought I'd ever live
to watch my nation freely give
It's integrity and it's class
For little pills and cheaper gas.
I never thought I'd see the day,
When democracy up and ran away
When the torch on the Statue of Liberty
Was the symbol of all that was not free.
I never thought I'd hear it said
That the freedom for which my fathers bled
Had been sold to the pharma-kings and big oil
And that they alone would benefit from my toil.
I never thought I'd live to see
The silencing of the brave and muzzling of the free
to prevent them from saying with voices raised loud
when this is all wrong for fear of the crowd.
I never thought it would come to pass
when the vellum we stored under glass
and claim as our precious source of light
could be used to bring about endless night.
I never thought it could come to this
that in our greed we could be so remiss
To set aside the cries of both the poor and the needy.
And forget...it's about We the people, not you the greedy.

Todd-dude! This is a PSA.
He said in a post on the internet.
I wasn't going to do this, but you know I couldn't let it lie. Let's face it. You people do like to goad me. You enjoy seeing me apoplectic.
I admit, I almost choked before I settled down and wrote the following response (tongue slightly in cheek - and apologies to Todd for stealing his rhyme scheme.):
I always hoped I'd come to live
To watch my nation fight and give
Its ideals and its brass
To help others, too, find greener grass
I always believed I'd see the day
When capitalism had no need to hide away
Then the New York Stock Exchange
Became the target of the deranged.
I always dreamed I'd hear it said
That the freedom for which our fathers bled
Bought us long lives and rich rewards
And cool new Mustangs made by Ford.
I always knew I'd live to see
The power of the Press for all the free
To speak and criticize with voices loud
When the powerful hide beneath a shroud
I always thought it would come to pass
That the people would see and know at last
That We The People are the source of light
And it's our skin for which we must fight
I'm not surprised it would come to this
That so many ignore the truth they dismiss
That commies and socialists are the anacronism
And all that's good in this world comes from capitalism
To which Kimberly replied:
Thank god I had a $25 Gift Card from Meijer to fill up the gas tank on my compact sedan.
Now I can drive to the mall and pick up that cute pair of sandals and Laurall K Hamilton's new book that's out in hardcover!
Any questions?
Slam dunk Toddibear!
Love the use of bold patriotic language - very ironic.
